ABOUT US
SLING GUAM - Preserving our CHamoru culture through Slinging
In CHamoru, slingstones (called åcho' atupat) are stones of different sizes sharpened on both ends and hurled with deadly force from a sling during battle. They were made of limestone, basalt, or fire-hardened clay and suspended from pandanus or coconut fiber slings. Slingstones were the deadliest weapons deployed by the ancient CHamoru warriors in battles.
The slingstone is an integral and indispensable part of Guam's culture, so much that the emblem's shape recollects the slingshot stones that were used by ancient CHamoru people. "Åcho'atupat" is part of the elements for the Guam seal, as you've already known. Apart from the fact that it was used as a weapon in ancient CHamorro times, it is also believed to be state-of-the-art for this age. As a matter of fact, Guam is the only political entity in this world that features the slingstone on both its flag and seal.
